Spectra Academy Combines Computers and Graphic Novels to Assist Teens with Autism

Posted: Friday, July 2, 2010 - 10:00

Spectra Academy in NJ has received a grant from an autism organization to combine computer training and graphic novels to reach adolescents with autism. The teens will first receive computer training and fiction writing training, and then create graphic novels using their new skills. Marcia Sherman, an internal medicine doctor with a son with autism created the academy in 2007. Sherman says about the program, “Autistic people are very much visual thinkers. However, their main problem is distinguishing between the main idea and detail of a story, so we feel that graphic design will help their organization.” Spectra Academy is hoping to expand into other life-skills related areas, such as cooking classes.
