Art Gallery in West Palm Beach Showcases Work by Students with Autism

Posted: Monday, May 10, 2010 - 11:26

'My Piece of the World: Art by Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder’ is the most recent exhibit at The Educational Gallery Group (Eg2) space. Eg2’s mission is to work with students in the Palm Beach County school system. For this exhibit, students with autism in the district each got an 8-inch square cardboard puzzle piece to decorate. The art work is as unique as the individual students; one child used a photograph of a young girl blowing bubbles, another pictures of tiny guitars, and a third covered his puzzle piece with a collage of different textures. While the students are not always verbal enough to communicate how they are feeling, art gives them an outlet. With art they can find a way to express emotions and ideas. One student was asked why he decorated his puzzle piece with broad black brush strokes: “Maybe because it looks awesome.”
